WEEK 8 - Missionaries Are Like Vampires
Missionaries are like vampires. We stalk the streets as the sun goes down, the aforementioned “prime time” residing within the hours of 6-9 PM. We wear Victorian dress–at least by today’s standards. Sisters don dresses of ankle length, as well as dress suits and pants. Elders are suited in white shirts and colored pants; both are outfits for would-be vampires in the present-day. We appear older than one would assume, averaging between the ages of 18 to 22, as each new guess is correct. “24!” “25!” and “26!” are dismissed with a smile and a mouth agape by the presumer. Much like vampires, missionaries are unafraid of death. They waltz into apartment complexes with the orchestral soundtrack of cars speeding, guns blazing, and dogs barking in the constant background. They knock on every door they see, talking with each and every person, looking for their next victim. They stand on door mats as doors swing open, hoping and praying that they might be invited inside, never once making their way into the house until there is confirmation–sometimes even a second confirmation–that they are allowed to enter. Once inside, the missionary and the vampire preach eternal life; to live forever and never die. Once converted, each victim experiences mortal death (or will experience) before eternal life in perfected forms. Missionaries are like vampires.
Believe it or not, I did not have a terrible experience this week. I just found this comparison to be amusing so I entertained the idea here. My week flew by. I visited Johnson Space Center, heard dozens of gun shots in the apartment complexes we knock, and bonded with the members in the Houston 4 Spanish ward. I love it here and constantly think about all of the films that took place in Texas. The Tree of Life, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, X, Boyhood, There Will Be Blood, No Country For Old Men, Paris, Texas--all the best and I’m living in it. Choncho and I say goodbye and talk to you later.
Also check out this super cool talk/lesson that I think is incredible about the Book of Mormon and textual evidence.
