WEEK 29 - After The Storm

So, I guess I spoke too soon because right after I sent my last email our Mission President, through the AP’s who actually had service on their phones, told us that we weren’t allowed to leave our apartments and had to stay inside not only for the rest of P-Day but for the entire night. The next day, we were instructed that we could go out but only if we did service so we ended up doing service from 10am to 9pm all day last Tuesday. Then, the next day, our Zone Conference had been moved to merge with like six other zones in the mission which is technically against the rules because you can only have that many zones together if an apostle comes, but we had a general authority come and speak to us (Elder Evan A. Schmutz) and after 17 departing missionary testimonies we finally got permission to proselytize. So, from Monday to Wednesday of last week, we didn’t do any teaching and could barely do any contact with our friends because the service was so spotty.

Sealy wasn’t hit super bad, but at a certain point we were going to be the eye of the hurricane so that’s pretty cool, but I’m just kind of thrown off because of how strange this week has been. We’ve done a ton of service and have been able to teach a bunch of our friends since the hurricane but it really did throw a lot of things off. Sugar Land, my last area, was hit pretty hard and so were parts of Katy as well as Houston–enough for an apostle to call my Mission President and tell him that none of us could leave our apartments (shoutout Elder Uchtdorf). And now, the transfer is practically over.

It feels like this transfer has gone by so fast because we’ve all just been looking forward to the end of the six weeks (mainly Elder Funk because he is going to his assigned mission of Villahermosa, Mexico) but it has gone especially fast because of the amount of abnormality that has occurred. But, aquí estamos.

Anyerson and Angelica are still praying to get married, Yohan is still reading the Book of Mormon, David is sad he couldn’t go to the temple because of the hurricane, and we are finding more and more elect people. Like, people that the Lord has prepared for this time, right now. People that the sister missionaries had taught, but weren’t ready and now are dying to come to church and dying to make covenants with their Heavenly Father. And we’re also finding members, too! We found five members who had just moved here from Honduras who want to come to church and can also speak English pretty well! So they're a direct answer to my prayers about how we can help the Sealy ward, Spanish and English speaking members! And on top of that, we are still able to find new people in areas we have knocked and visited countless times–it’s insane. Please pray for everyone listed here because prayer really does work.

On top of all that, my studies have been bangin.  The Bible is very cool and you should read it from cover to cover. People who place the Book of Mormon on a higher pedestal are valid, but if you’ve never ventured into the catacombs of the Old Testament, I implore you to. It’s a part of the standard works for a reason. The Book of Mormon is proof that the heavens are open today, but to truly understand the gravity of that sentiment, you must be able to know what it was once like when they were first opened with the genesis of man. Because I have been reading the Bible from cover to cover for the past few months, I was able to have an hour long conversation with a woman who is a biblical scholar, PhD holder, and best-selling author about the Twelve Tribes of Israel and their relationship with the Book of Mormon. The things we talked about only confirmed the veracity and truth found within the Book of Mormon, some of which I was only able to answer because I had the Spirit with me and I had pleaded with God to help me to know how to answer every single question she had–and I did. I have high hopes for her, her name is Melissa, and we have now set up for another phone call lesson very soon to talk some more about how true the Book of Mormon is and I hope I’m able to continue to defend and verify its truth, only because I took the time–and the following of a spiritual impression months ago–to read the Bible’s holy writ. So, in a roundabout way, go read the Bible if you haven’t in a minute, or ever, because you will only begin to widen your horizon of truth and confirmation of this Gospel and our Savior.

That was my week. Goodbye.
